What is a Habitat Management Plan?
A habitat management plan is a document that outlines practical actions to be taken at a site by a responsible body/bodies, with the intention of improving and/or maintaining it in the long term. It can be focused on wildlife and / or people.
There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to creating a plan, it depends on factors such as;
- Size and complexity of the site – a smaller site with relatively simple habitats such as amenity grassland and a newly planted hedgerow will require a shorter, less detailed plan compared to a site that is larger and more complex or a sensitive site e.g., a Local Nature Reserve with a varied mix of habitats.
- Users of the plan – is the plan to be used as part of a consultation? Is it a technical document for contractors? You may want to adjust the tone and language of the report according to who will be reading it.
- Overall aims of the plan – do you want to restore biodiversity at a site, manage it for increased visitor access, focus on a particular species?
